2012 J Krishnamurti - Is suffering merely a word or an actuality?

One is always seeking endlessly, going from one book to another, from one philosophy to another, from one teacher to another. And what we are really seeking is not clarity, is not the understanding of the actual state of mind, but rather we are searching for ways and means to escape from ourselves. Religions in different forms throughout the world have offered this escape, and we are satisfied in trying to find out a convenient, pleasurable, satisfying retreat. [See Culture and Religion vs Self-Responsibility for more perspective] When one observes all this - the increasing population, the utter callousness of human beings, the utter disregard for others' feelings, for others' lives, the utter neglect of the social structure - one wonders if order out of this chaos can be brought about. Not political order - politics can never bring about order; neither an economic structure nor a different ideology can bring about order. But we do need order. For, there is a great deal of disorder, both outwardly and inwardly, of which one is vaguely, speculatively, casually aware. One feels the problems are too immense. The population is exploding so fast that one asks oneself, "What can I do as a human being living in this chaotic misery, violence, stupidity? What can I do?" Surely, you must have asked this question of yourself if you are at all serious. And if one has asked oneself this very serious question, "What can one do oneself?", the invariable answer is: "I am afraid I can do very little to alter the structure of society, to bring about order, not only within but also outwardly". And generally one asks the question "what can I do?", and invariably the answer is "very little". There one stops. But the problem demands a much deeper answer.   -J Krishnamurti Source

The fact that all the political, religious, economic, and philosophical systems of the past have brought no solutions to this world that are Best for All is obvious. But is it a fact that one can do very little to change oneself and the world? Obviously we cannot look to the systems of the past, as they have only existed to perpetuate and repeat what came before. Although the forms may be different (eg capitalism vs communism) the result is always the same: mistrust between humans, abuse of each other and the environment, and the physical suffering of the vast majority of beings on the planet.

Within Krishnamurti's quote, he points out that one can enter into a despair when one sees that there is no system one can trust to bring order to this world - and thus the point is missed that one cannot simply find the solution 'out there'. No matter what system one places one's trust in, if one's starting point is not what is Best for All, then the system will not work.  I can form a group that is based on trust and Equality and yet if the members, each individually, do not live from the Principle of Equality within their participation with each other and reality, then the group will not stand.

We cannot blame the systems of the past for the suffering they have caused. We are the ones who have participated in them all along.  We have abdicated our self-responsibility to the systems and they have only acted according the rules set forth. (For further perspective on this specific point listen to: Starvation is not about food.)

The solution to this world must be approached both as a systemic solution as well as an individual solution. In fact, the systemic solution is quite obvious. The only system that will create a world that is Best for All is one that considers each one Equally and gives to each what they require to live and participate as Equals. Within this, though, each one who benefits from the system must participate One and Equal to what they receive. If one is to have everything they need to live then they must be willing to give that to each and every other being in existence. The common sense in this stems from the obvious fact that we are all One and not separate from each other physically. The air I breathe is the same substance as the air you breathe. We have only separated ourselves from each other through our minds by secluding ourselves into little individual bubbles where we ignore everything except what we have defined as 'I'.  This however only leads us to participating in reality in such a way that we ignore the physical needs of others and to accumulate consequences that will inevitably affect every single being in existence. There was for a time, systems in place that kept these consequences from coming back to certain beings, mainly those with money and in positions of power, however this is no longer the case. (Forfurther perspective on these systems and how they were removed, listen to: The Cure for Curiosity.)

So, the solution must systematically give to each Equally and each one who participates in the system must be willing to participate Equally. Such a system is the Equal Money System, where each is considered and provided for Equally to never have to separate oneself from Reality for fear of survival. (For more perspective on Equal Money, read: Equal Money - Future of Money Vol. 1.) It can't and won't work any other way, because any other system would be one the same as what we have now. In Mathematics, there is the concept of an 'isomorphism' which is when 2 systems are fundamentally the same and yet their appearance may different. What is the same is the consequences and underlying rules of the systems. We could say that any system that does not have as its starting point Oneness and Equality as what is Best for All is isomorphic and will always produce a reality that is not Best for All and will create as a consequence suffering. At an individual level, any approaches to reality where one separate oneself from what is Here physically, whether through beliefs, ideas, dreams, wishes, desires, ignorance, deliberate spitefulness, etc, are isomorphic and will again only create a system that is not Best for All.

If we are going to solve the problems in this world our approach must be to change ourselves as individuals to be able to live in a way that supports everyone Equally and we must therefore create a system from that starting point that actually, in fact, gives to all Equally. Then and only then will we not have to despair at a world in crisis that seems to big and scary for an individual to do anything about it.  Obviously the proposed solution cannot be carried out by an individual and thus each must be willing to walk with a Group that stands for the same solution within the same starting point. Desteni is such a group and if you are ready to walk One and Equal to create a world that is Best for All, then we invite you to walk with us. Desteni exists to provide a way in which we can, as individuals support each other to stand up within the System that we have accepted and allowed to act on our behalf - and to support each one to stand up within oneself to stop the preprogramming that one has accepted and allowed to direct one's participation in this reality, which in turn supports the larger system as a whole to continue as is.

Changing oneself is a process that starts with stopping one's preprogramming which only supports self-interest and prevents one from participating in physical reality here - separating oneself into one's own bubble. That is obviously difficult when one daily face the system that we currently have in this world, constantly being impulsed to focus on survival and escape through entertainment - which is why it is critical that one walk with a group, where one can walk with others who have already been in the process of changing themselves for some time. So , although it may seem impossible, there are others who are already doing it - and you can learn from their example, although when it comes to changing yourself, ultimately it is something you will have to do for yourself.

Krishnamurti claimed that the answer to 'What can I do?' was much deeper than simply resigning oneself to giving up in the face of an immense challenge. With Desteni, the answer is Here - the only question is 'What will you do now?'
